People sometimes ask when FluxMintDigital began. The honest answer depends on what you mean by “began.” If you mean the website, the name, or the logo… those arrived relatively recently. If you mean the ideas… they’ve been under construction for much longer.
Looking back, I don’t think I was trying to build a company. I was trying to answer a question that kept following me through different parts of my life. Why do some ideas seem to connect so naturally while others remain isolated? The more I explored that question, the more I noticed something interesting. The connections mattered as much as the ideas themselves. Sometimes more.
Many of the projects that eventually became FluxMintDigital didn’t begin as products. They began as notebooks. Sketches. Conversations. Questions scribbled in the margins of books. Diagrams that only made sense to me at the time. Small observations that refused to disappear. At first they looked unrelated. Years later I realized they were quietly describing the same landscape.
That realization changed my relationship with creating. I stopped asking, “What should I make next?” Instead I began asking, “What naturally belongs here?” That question removed a surprising amount of pressure. Not every idea deserved to become a product. Some belonged as articles. Some became books. Some evolved into software. Some remained private notes waiting for the right season. Architecture isn’t just deciding what to build. It’s deciding what not to build.
One lesson became increasingly difficult to ignore. The world doesn’t seem to suffer from a shortage of information. It often suffers from a shortage of orientation. People are surrounded by answers while quietly wondering whether they’re asking the right questions. That observation became one of the reasons this studio exists. Not to compete with the world’s information. To create a place where understanding can grow a little more deliberately.
If you spend enough time inside the studio, you’ll probably notice something. Nothing exists in isolation. The books point toward the Observatory. The Observatory points toward the Workshop. The Workshop points toward conversations. Those conversations inspire new observations. Eventually those observations become books again. The architecture is intentionally circular. Not because repetition is the goal. Because learning rarely follows a straight line. We revisit familiar places with new understanding.
People sometimes imagine that clarity arrives all at once. My experience has been very different. Most clarity has arrived gradually. One observation. One conversation. One mistake. One refinement. Very little of this studio appeared fully formed. Almost everything has been revised. Sometimes many times. That’s not evidence of failure. It’s evidence that understanding continues evolving.
There is another assumption I’d gently challenge. Creators are often encouraged to appear certain. Confident. Polished. As though uncertainty somehow diminishes credibility. I’ve found the opposite to be true. Some of the most meaningful conversations begin when someone is willing to say, “I’m still exploring this.” That sentence creates room for collaboration. The studio is built on that room.
Perhaps that’s why I rarely think of FluxMintDigital as something I’ve finished. It feels much more like a workshop with the lights still on. Books are being written. Ideas are being tested. Software is being built. Questions are being collected. The work continues. I hope it always will.
If there’s one thing I’d like visitors to take away from this place, it isn’t the impression that everything here is complete. It’s the realization that meaningful work can remain unfinished without being directionless. Some of the best things in life continue growing precisely because they remain open to refinement. The studio was built with that in mind.
FluxMintDigital isn’t the destination. It’s where I keep returning to continue the work. Perhaps that’s what a studio has always been. Not a monument to finished ideas. A home for living ones.
